Ligman Lighting USA, in partnership with Mac’s II Agencies, is proud to present the illumination of the "Commerce Canoe" — a 36-foot suspended sculpture by Illarion Gallant at Triangle Green in Victoria, BC, celebrating local history and community.
When the installation was relocated from Bastion Square, the challenge was clear: illuminate a suspended structure in a high-traffic intersection while preserving the artist’s vision and complying with International Dark-Sky Association guidelines. The site’s coastal location added complexity, requiring engineered luminaires that could withstand constant exposure to salt air, moisture, and other harsh North Pacific conditions while consistently delivering controlled illumination.
Mac’s II Agencies’ Ryan Brown specified KIOS 5 in-ground luminaires from Ligman's extensive portfolio to deliver the optical control required for balancing dark skies and proper illumination requirements. The time-tested design of the KIOS 5 also had the durability required for coastal conditions. Ligman's photometrics team developed models and renderings showing how strategically positioned and aimed beam distributions could illuminate the installation from below and achieve balanced vertical lighting across the entire form while controlling glare, eliminating light trespass, and minimizing sky glow resulting in a uniform sculptural highlight.
Projects like this demonstrate how precise engineering coupled with creative freedom can elevate public art without compromising environmental responsibility.
